Born in 1985, I’m an emerging artist based in the heart of historic Winchester, Hampshire UK. I paint the landscape in Winchester, The New Forest and Bournemouth primarily outdoors (plein air) in oils.
I grew up by the sea in Southbourne in Bournemouth which influenced of my love of the natural world, spending lots of time in the New Forest and walking sections of the South West Coast path in Dorset also did too. Winchester is now my home and the nature that surrounds me is a source of constant inspiration.
Capturing a sense of place and atmosphere within a landscape is important to me as are the deeper meanings behind what is initially seen. Sometimes my paintings are accompanied by a poem, thought or reflection about the landscape. The contemplative effect painting can have both on the viewer and the artist is interesting to me. I reference the British romantic landscape painters as well as the tonalist movement. Influences include JMW Turner, John Constable, Richard Parkes Bonnington and Edward Seago.
I live with my husband James and my three young children. Before becoming a fine artist I worked in marketing within the charity sector, and have a BA in Cultural Studies from the University of Birmingham.
‘The role of the landscape painter must always have two great and distinct ends: the first, to induce in the spectator’s mind the faithful conception of any natural objects: the second, to guide the spectator’s mind to those objects most worthy of its contemplation, and to inform them of the thoughts and feelings with which these are regarded by the artist.‘ John Ruskin, Painting and Painters
